We went to Bar Harbor Maine for the week. We took the train to Boston and then rented a room for the night, rented a car the next morning and drove to Bar Harbor where we stayed at the Black Friar Inn, a bed & breakfast place.

Sunday in Boston we stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel. On Sunday morning we met a bear and then arrived at our inn, the Black Friar, in Bar Harbor, about 5:30 p.m.

Monday we saw the Margaret Todd take sail and we took a whale watch tour. The Helen II was always closer to the whale. Our boat had a naturalist on it and he refused to get too close. The Helen II didn't seem to have any consideration for the whales. We also passed two lighthouses on our way.

Tuesday was a foggy day, all day. We visited Acadia Park, and the only thing we could see on any of the overlooks was fog, except for one where we met a seagull. We stopped at Jordan Pond (really a lake) and saw the bubble mountains, had some tea at the Jordan Pond House, and we walked around the pond, 3.3 miles. During our walk we saw the H-trees (two trees twined together, the long horizontal trunk is a different tree that is actually on the ground behind the H-trees), a nice blue flower, and what we called Gull Rock. Later in the week the overlooks were clear and beautiful.

Wednesday was again nice and clear. Beckie and I first walked across the "sand" bar to Bar Island. The bar is usable about one and a half hours before and after low tide. We hiked to the top of Bar Island and ate lunch. After that we took a few shots of Bar Harbor from Bar Island and then returned to the Black Friar Inn. Since it was such a clear day, we decided to go back to Acadia Park and take in some of those overlooks that were all fog the day before. We watched the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, 1530 feet above sea level.

Thursday we took sail on the Margaret Todd, a four-masted Schooner. You can see the sails going up, then some of the islands we passed, and then the sails coming down. We did see two bald eagles in trees on the islands but since we didn't get close we could only see them with our binoculars. We met another two-masted schooner that went around the other side of one of the small islands. After dinner we took in a play, "Proof," put on by a local group.

Friday was a cold and rainy day but we went out to Bass Harbor to visit the lighthouse there. Then we took a walk in the woods around one of the coves and then drove back to the Inn. Later we went to Thunder Hole and listened to the thunder it made at about one to two hours after low tide. That was supposed to be the best time for the sound. We got a few booms but nothing really big. It's better when there's a sea storm but we didn't have much of one.
